I bought the howl for my parents, they have a travel trailer and drive all over the country. Sometimes there is a no burn notification in certain areas and hauling/buying firewood, having to start the fire, then put it out is kind of a pain now that my dad is almost 80 years old. The Howl is the most durable of all of my fire pits (by far). It is as lso the warmest in small(R1) and medium(R4) sized classes. The R 1 is a no brainer, think no more buy it and get a tripod with a dutch oven to make 80% of campsite meals. The R4 is a bit more but it does its job exceedingly well. I love them both.

Wow! This is by far the best firepit we’ve ever owned. For years we settled for $100 costco pits - which used a lot more propane and we replaced rocks every couple years. We tried it this weekend on the Oregon coast (windy and kind chilly after dark in early April). The Howl was impressively warm and looks great. Our friends are likely saving up for one now too. Too bad there isn’t a referral code. Great product, American made and a small business. Tripple win. Expensive but worth it - seriously...

Initially I was like, geez that’s a lot for a bag. I was already in a “treat yo self” mood buying the r1 and went for it. The construction is top notch, fits like a glove, stows the hose in the flap and a side pocket for a lighter and flint striker…it’s all there, grab and go. The interior lining was well thought out too for cleaning without soaking down the bag. Materials seem they’ll last a good, long time.

I’ve used the Ignik Firecan for a couple of years now. It has served me well but I’ve always wanted a bit more heat on colder days.
I didn’t want to get anything larger because I’d keep this inside my van and space is a premium.
I think the R1 is a good upgrade. Same footprint as my Firecan but more heat.
Does it use less gas than the Firecan? I think both are comparable. The R1 just utilizes the gas better to provide more heat.
Would I spend the extra to get the R1 over the Fireca...

At first, I thought I wouldn't need one or I could get a generic bag. Given the all metal construction of the R1, it can bounce around in the back of my van and wreak havoc. I could strap it down or just throw it in a bag that is tough and fits like a glove. Some things are just worth the investment. This is one of them.
