I'd been prototyping a very similar design when I came across these. It's exactly what I was looking for in that they can be stacked vertically and also place horizontally next to each other without any gaps. My only nitpick is I wish they came in a wider range of colors.

I added a shelf that I made that spans 2 units. It was a bit difficult to made the 4” tall pieces (4 total) that support the shelf from the units below, but overall it turned out well and is very functional.
