This pillow is soft just like a marshmallow not too thick and it is always cold! I would love to use it without a pillow case, it would be even colder! I recommend a satin or silk case to make it colder! It stays cold but a regular bamboo thread pillow case makes it not as cold as the actual pillow, but much cooler than any pillow I have ever used. I do not like a large fluffy thick hard pillow, this one is thin enough and soft enough for me I AM IN LOVE
