my classic 61 y.o. Lane Acclaim table had been burned by incense cones back in the 1970's. I wanted to refinish it, as it is quite valuable now. the walnut is just a veneer, so they advise not to do heavy sanding, I purchased 10 plugs in order to pick the grain match if possible. I used a 1/2 in. Forstner bit and drilled to depth of plug, then a little finish sanding. they are not an invisable repair, but still much better than the burns. After removing 4 different colors of paint from our intricate Victorian balustrade, my contractor pointed out that the 3/4" round, 1/4" deep holes probably had something in them because they were very rough.
