This was my first time trying a chessboard and after painting the blank black I overfilled several of the spaces. To get rid of the overfill and the “bleeding”/“wicking up” of the resin, I had to run it through my drum sander many times. That resulted in taking off the top layer of the plywood. I then stained the whole thing, but some of the imperfections in the plywood (because the top layer was sanded off) showed up too dark. Then I painted the border black. The template worked great for someone like me, who only has marginal woodworking skills and no shop. This was my first time I made a live edge charcuterie board. The YouTube video from Crafted Elements were really helpful (thanks Shawn). The burl wood slab used came from 200 yr old salvaged olive trees from the central coast of California. The seller of this wood said It was probably planted by Spaniards in the 1800's. I’m really pleased on how straightforward this jig was to use. I utilized a test piece first, then went to my two finished cutting boards. I tried an Amazon mold and it was really tough to work with. I had to use a syringe to get the outside border filled. It was so bad that I didn't even keep it. I threw it out! I used teak wood for this particular pet bowl holder project. In my view, teak is a very easy cutting, carving, and routing type of wood. As you can see, the holder really does look as good as anything you can buy ready-made. Board oil was used to seal the teak so it darkened the wood a bit. Exactly the look I wanted.
